For 2-3 hours now I've been working on the Bowlback Mandolin Restoration Project. I got out my power drill and my clamps, I used the real big drill-bit and I used the teensiest drill-bit. I used sandpaper and screwdrivers, wire cutters and machine oil. The tuning pegs are now installed, the instrument has been strung, and the bridge has been positioned and scored to fit the strings.

Unfortunately, the instrument is not in tune, and I don't think I can get it in tune without some structural adjustment. It may be that the bridge is too tall; (the action is pretty darn high), or it may be the little piece that goes at the top of the fretboard. Maybe I can consult with the guys over at Hoffman? This is getting beyond me and calls for expert advice. On the plus side, the bowlback gives the strings a rich tone when plucked. And it's the prettiest little instrument I know.
