Last night, on my way home from the Friday Gamesday party, I got into the right turn lane on Snelling, preparing to follow my usual route home by turning onto University Avenue - only to find the way blocked by police cars across University Avenue at that intersection. I turned into the parking lot of the Midway Shopping Center to try a detour, only to find myself in a long line of other cars with the same idea.
Once I'd made it to the middle of the parking lot I could see that there were fire engines and more police cars in front of the empty warehouse on the corner of Simpson and University. I assume the warehouse to be empty because it's one block from where I live, and I've passed it frequently in the past couple years, and noticed broken windows on the second floor, boarded over first-floor windows and the general air of neglect.
Rather than wait in queue to be let out at Pascal, I got back onto Snelling and took my turn at Sherburne. From there, passing Simpson, I could see the huge billows of smoke from the fire, but it looked like the fire department had it all under control.
