I set out this morning about 11:15, thinking to use a coupon and the last of my cash to grab a meal at Burger King before going to Rosedale for the 12:30 showing of 'Spiderman, into the Spiderverse.'

That plan didn't last long. The car wouldn't start. The engine wouldn't turn over, though there was enough battery life to show the indicator light for an open door. I'd last used the car on Saturday afternoon to attend the baby shower for my niece, Julia. There's a recurring problem with the hatchback door not latching properly. I guessed it must have failed when I'd closed it Saturday after unloading groceries and a rocking chair I'd picked up from niece Elise.

I checked the premise by going to lift the hatchback and slamming it smartly shut. Getting back behind the wheel, yep the indicator light was now off. It must have been on overnight Saturday, all day Sunday and overnight Sunday. Sigh. I called AAA for a jump start.

AAA told me my account had expired on January 1st. I was put on hold. Eventually the call cut off. I called back and this time spoke to someone in customer service who helped me re-establish my account. (It's a credit card setback, but that's what credit is for.) And told me someone should get to me by 12:30. There went my hope of still catching the movie, but I thought I might be able to defer my Fandango ticket to the next showing.

I sat around waiting in the condo lobby, reading Father Brown stories by GK Chesterton until 12:15, when I got the call. The AAA guy told me the battery looked pretty old and offered to replace it for $140. (Do batteries really cost that much?) I settled for just getting the jump start at present. Yay! It started right up with the jump.

And he told me I should now keep the engine running for an HOUR before shutting it down again.

In the past, I've always heard to keep it running at least twenty minutes. In any case, I went ahead and took the highway to the exit nearest Rosedale and used the drive-thru at the Burger King, and sat with the engine running and ate a chicken sandwich and fries. By the time I drove to the theater and found parking it was just about 1:00PM. The engine had been running for more than half an hour. I decided to risk shutting down. (SPOILER: the car started just fine when it was time to return home.)

At the ticket window the cashier told me the showing was only about ten minutes into the movie. I'd mainly missed the previews. I like previews, but this was good news.

So, I came in a bit late, but was there for the inciting incident when the 'spiderverse' split open and I greatly enjoyed the rest of the show: engaging, fun, emotionally moving, funny, wonderfully well done! I stayed for all the credits and only then learned that Lily Tomlin was the voice of Aunt May and Nicholas Cage was the voice of the Noir Spiderman. I'd see it again.
