On September 8th I learned of the passing of my aunt, Elizabeth Sweder. We always called her Aunt Liffy or Lif when I was growing up. I never heard why, but suspect it was because one of the younger members of the family had trouble saying Liz or Elizabeth.

She was the next younger of my mother's two sisters. Beside my mother's keeping-chaos-at-bay style of homemaking with six children, Lif seemed always to have everything under control: an excellent hostess, with a well kept home, and two kempt and charming daughters who were exemplars of good behavior (when not running around in the woods or playing on the lake shore with our free-ranging gang of cousins.)

Nonetheless, I eventually caught on how much Lif had in common with me: her reserved manner concealed an underlying shy sensitivity. We also shared an interest in the arts. She was a talented sculptress and author of a family memoir that revealed her interest in and close attention to the people and circumstances of her life, going back generations before her own birth. I'm particularly sorry that her passing has denied us the chance to hear more of the stories I'm sure she had left to tell.

In her own words:

"I am a grandmother, homemaker, and artist with a BFA degree in Sculpture and Ceramics. My husband and I live on a lake north of Fergus Falls in Otter Tail County, Minnesota. I enjoy writing, interacting with family, reading, participating in the Fergus Falls Writing Group, and other creative activities. I enjoy cooking and baking, but not cleaning the house.

"I recently published my first book "The Red Cottage: A Memoir".
