I was delighted to attend yesterday’s meeting of the MFW and meet some of its inspiring members.

After the meeting I went out to lunch with a group of the members, and had a chance to talk with a few of them. Kathleen Eagle has published 40 books! And she gave a talk during the meeting about brainstorming for story and character development, which I'm already finding useful. I enjoyed the chance to talk to her on a more individual basis, and discovered that she's a Mount Holyoke grad; she called me 'sister' on hearing that I'm a Wellesley grad.

On my way home afterward I stopped at my local Borders Book Store, thinking to pick up a copy of one of Patti O’Shea’s books she had mentioned to me. (She also writes paranormal romance and recently won an award for best in that field.) Unfortunately, though 12 copies were listed as being ‘in store,’ neither I, nor one of the store’s employees could find it anywhere.

This led me to speak to a manager and suggest that it would be nice to have a rack in the romance section featuring the work of local writers. He thought it was a great idea! Borders does have a ‘local author’ shelf for its more mainstream books. I happened to have with me a handout including a list of the MFW's published authors. He asked to copy it and of course I let him!

The manager at Borders was so agreeable that it led me to think it may be worthwhile for other MFW members to speak to managers of the bookstores closest to them about doing something similar. It could help bring a higher profile to the published work of our members. So I suggested that on our mailing list.
