Whew!
Errands all day: starting with bringing the car in for diagnosis at 7:30 a.m.
Fortunately, the problem turned out to be that the catalytic converter had become detached from the muffler pipe; all it needed was to be welded back together - costing me less than $100 - and it's now running as quiet as a purring kitten (compared to the lion's roar it had been emitting every time I hit the accelerator.) Yay! Yay! Yay!
