Yesterday evening I went with Sam (WINOLJ) to a picnic for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters participants. It was held at a park just south of downtown St Paul where there's a local Music/Movie night, with a live band and a showing of 'Big,' with Tom Hanks.
Sam, her co-worker Katie and I got there early and measured out colorful crochet thread and had our picnic (Sam provided spring rolls and a wonderful oriental-style salad.) Half a dozen pairs of Big/Littles showed up for the beading event. I gave the initial instructions, but one girl was miles ahead of me, and set out to make much fancier versions of the bracelet we'd figured would be simple enough for everyone to learn. The youngsters and adults both had fun picking out colorful beads to represent their assets. (Asset lists were provided by the organization, falling into eight general categories, and included things like Responsibility and Confidence.)
It was a good time.
