I just had to cancel an appointment I should never have made in the first place. One of those people who won't take 'I'm not ready to do my financial planning yet' for an answer, and insists that she can help you...

I got the same feeling from her that I got from the kind of guy who tries to talk you into bed when you're not sure that's what you want, and the more convincing he gets the more you don't want to be anywhere near him. When she called this morning (the third contact since setting the appointment (she sent me a confirmation letter, and a map and a 'dream' book) I told her I wouldn't be able to make it, nor for the foreseeable future.

I feel like such a wimp. I wanted to tell her, "If and when I decide that I need a financial planner I'll look for one who listens as well as she speaks, and doesn't make me feel like I'm being pushed around."

Even after I told her, repeatedly, that I wasn't ready to pursue the matter at this time, she kept talking at me for a couple full minutes (while I held the phone away from my ear) - until finally I could get a word in and say 'I've really got to go,' and hang up without being totally rude.

I feel you. It's hard to be forceful even when they are, because they're just doing there job.

Well, and I hate to be downright rude. Some people take advantage of that by refusing to take the polite hint that you're not interested.

I've got to work on being more definitively firm while keeping to my own standards of courtesy.

Tell them you have no money. They'll drop you like a bad habit!

I told her I was still working on getting my business off the ground. She didn't get it. I need a bigger clue-bat with which to hit her sort.

And I don't know what it is about me, but I can be walking around in rags and $5 dollar shoes and people seem to think I'd make a good mark. Must be my sunny disposition. :)
