Summary

Writing a five page summary of an 80,000 word novel was a lot harder than I figured. Mostly because what's five pages in Times New Roman 11 point font is nine pages in the required 12 point New Courier font. (All double-spaced)

After writing the nine page version there was a whole 'nother round of cutting to get down to the five page version. Sheesh.

Can't you get it down to Hollywood-level basics?

Girl meets sword. Sword meets boy. Girl and sword claim magical prize.

I have a one-sentence 'log line' - but a synopsis requires more in the way of description.

I would have thought it would be easier to write a shorter summary than a five page one. Perhaps because I'm used to blurbs on the backs on books. In a longer one you have to really think about how much detail to give. Regardless of the direction you took, congrats on getting the summary done. There's a lot that goes into entering a contest beyond the work itself, if that makes sense.

For me it's easier to write a complete description of the basic story events and themes - than to have to decide what to omit for the sake of brevity.

Thanks on your congrats. It's good to get something done.
