Starlings in the chimney?

I think there are starlings nesting in the chimney of the fireplace in my living room. I never use the fireplace, and put a sheet of cardboard in front of it (behind the screen) for insulation. Lately I've been hearing chirpy-chittery outbursts of sound from that direction. Maybe it's bats?
