WEEK OF Aug 19 - 26, 2024

I made both visits to Terry this past week, and was joined on one by Terry's brother Jim, and on the other by her friend Karen Shaffer who was in town following Worldcon and had also just visited the state fair and had lots of photos to share from both.

Otherwise I met with my Blue Cross care coordinator, with the physical therapist for my hand and attended a seminar on estate planning. The latter was interesting, but I'm not sure how useful when it comes to setting things up to pass on my intellectual property, since I haven't got much in the way of monetary assets. I did learn that you can have up to three million dollars in Minnesota without having to pay estate taxes on it.

I don't expect to inherit much when my stepmom dies and the money from my father is distributed to his kids, because they were very good about giving us money while they were still alive (for instance, they matched whatever any of us could come up with for a down payment on a house). We know that was our "inheritance money." Dad wanted us to avoid estate taxes as much as possible.

As for us, we keep putting on doing any lawyer-assisted will because we own our house and have no other real assets. We made a will. That's about as good as it'll get. Unless someone wants my collection of Swedish-language books, but no one in my family would.

A will is good. Apparently Prince's estate lost millions for lack of a will and having to put everything through probate
