Friday Jill had called to tell me that one of the unfixed cats had sprayed near the front door." (No wonder Ray left in such a hurry after dropping me off after the website meeting Thursday evening.) Jill vacuumed and sprayed the area with 'Petzyme' cleanser. When I got home I hauled the rug entirely out of the house to the clothes line, draped it over a couple lengths of the line and hosed it down thoroughly. I took every throw rug out to the balcony, shook it and left it to air. I swept everywhere, mopped and sprayed more Petzyme. I cleaned out behind the couch and sprayed more Petzyme in another suspicious area. I vacuumed and sprayed the couch itself for good measure. I left windows open over night. I did more of this sort of thing on Saturday. Ray isn't the only one allergic to cats, and the Filkers were due that evening.
My measures were effective enough that Jill could report the smell was gone, and Thorin, who is allergic, had no trouble at the filk session. (Unfortunately, Ray, who had previously expressed a lot of interest in filking, never showed up.) All the regulars were there, though, and we had a good time with singing and general noise-making. I had cooked up a potato-carrot-hamburger hash, there was left-over cream of salmon soup, and Richard brought Pecan Sandies. The next morning Ray showed up at my door and apologized for not making it to filk – he said he still wanted to participate, but he was more interested at the suggestion that we could have the circle out in the back yard next time. He seemed afraid to enter the house and find out for himself that conditions had actually improved since his last visit.
