While the blossoms still cling to the vine...

WEEK OF June 16-23, 2025

It’s been since mid-April, just before Minicon, since I’ve done a general update. Originally, I was writing weekly reports for a couple friends who were into doing ‘Goals updates’ with me. A way of keeping on track with our long-term goals – we’ve been doing it for many years now. The process helped me go from aspiring writer to published writer and saw me through the many distractions of moving from home to home and day job to day job. Recently one of those friends has been suffering from dementia and the other is struggling with cancer and I don’t want the goals updates to become any kind of demand on their energies through such difficult times.

Still, I think it does me some good to take an overview perspective on my life from time to time, and may be of some interest to other friends who happen across the reports. I’m not focused on any long-term goals currently – aside from basic survival.

I’ve been keeping up with making weekly visits to TerryG, and have been assembling items for a bug-out bag, given how the present political situation has made the world seem more insecure than it has seemed since the days of the cold war when I was a youth. The power grid could be a target for bad guys and I rely on it for Everything. I’m shopping for a sleeping bag now. I gave my old one away to an organization that helps the homeless. I ordered a few MRE meals and a solar-powered battery for re-charging my devices. I got a test kit for water and purification tablets I’ve ordered rehydrated food for Rajesh also, though I’m also insecure about the prospects for his survival. I’m giving him a cancer med prescribed by our vet but he’s still obviously ailing: skinny and wheezing constantly. I don’t mind staying home with him most of the time.

I’m doing a lot of reading, currently Alan Dean Foster’s Flynx and Pip books that I first discovered in the eighties, but hadn’t realized there were so many more in the series. I’ve also reconnected with my old friend, Jill who lives in Grand Marais and have recommended a series of mysteries by Steve Higgs to her. Jill is an anglophile and the books are written and set in Great Britain. She also had a German shepherd when we first met and the books feature a retired police-dog (Rex Harrison, a German shepherd who had too much attitude for the force). I hope Jill enjoys the books; they seem made for her.

Meanwhile, and perhaps a factor in my lack of energy these days, I’ve been in a lot of pain with my teeth; I’ve been planning a major lot of extractions and getting a set of dentures made, but the U’s Oral Surgery folk are scheduled out the wazoo and I may not be able to get my surgery scheduled before October. I’m so glad that CBD oil is legal here in Minnesota these days. It is helping me deal with the head and jaw aches. Still expensive and I doubt my Medicare will help with that.

I’m also watching a lot of TV: old episodes of Star Trek, TOS, and the new Librarians and the old Gilmore Girls series… I wonder what the ancients who invented Theater would think of what modern media has made possible…

With orders to identify and clarify and classify

WEEKs OF Mar 3 to now, 2025

Last Wednesday’s snow storm led me to delay making my visit to Terry until Friday. In the meanwhile I kept up  with making small steps toward other goals: I ordered a new med the vet prescribed for Rajesh, paid extra for expedited shipping and it arrived the next day; I’ve now been administering it orally for the past week. Fortunately, he seems to like the chicken/marshmallow(!) flavor.

My sole house-plant suffered an injury a few weeks ago and I've been trying to propagate new roots from a detached branch. It's being awfully slow about it, but it looks like some nubs are on the way.

I ran my ads for a few days, but they need rethinking, as they are not getting many clicks. I’ve also studied a tutorial for a money-making scheme doing promotions on Instagram. I’m more interested in my reading material: currently the ‘Age of Unreason’ series by Greg Keyes – an interesting alternate history with alternate science, wherein Ben Franklin is a main character.

I'm still watching old episodes of The Avengers. Themes of mind control and paranoia around technology are more time-honored than I'd realized.

As of this current week, the snow is gone. I visited Terry again on Wednesday but have not had much energy for other projects. My Bookbub ads are on hold. I've been thinking about framing the painting I'll display at the Unicorn Art show if accepted.

Yesterday evening I participated in an online meeting of the Minicon Con Committee. I'm not on the committee, but I'm interested in a number of Minicon activities. Mainly Art Show this year, but I've been active in music and programming in other years. I didn't express interest in doing a filk concert this year or in participating on panels, but am still interested in hearing about the progress of planned events. My kudos to those on the committee; it looks like the con will go forward!

Gently down the stream

WEEK OF Feb 24 – Mar 3, 2025

I heard back from Pawp, who denied my claim for Rajesh’s veterinary care. (Amounting to more than $500). They claimed it was a pre-existing condition. I Canceled my account with them. Raj is now fifteen years old and other pet insurance plans all list accounts at more than $100/month. I don’t know what to do. I’ve been applying the ointment prescribed by the vet, but there is still a lump of infection on his forehead, though it seems to have moved more into his nose.

Meanwhile, I made the trip to the Minicon hotel on Saturday. The front desk was no help in finding the board meeting; the one listed started at 1pm, but the M’con board meeting was to start at two. By looking online, I eventually made it – a bit late – to the meeting in Plaza 4. I was duly impressed by how well-in-hand the arrangements for the convention looked to be. I wandered around to the room where the Mnstf party was scheduled to occur, but it was still locked up. I greeted a few people waiting there, but didn’t linger long as the indoor-air was bothering my eyes. I headed home again, missing the chance to get girl scout cookies, so stopping at Aldi where I got Jaffa cakes instead.

Seeing Terry once a week worked out reasonably well this week. It seemed to leave me with more energy for addressing other concerns. I worked on a couple new book ads and applied to participate in an art show. These activities helped me keep going in the face of the political news which had been getting me down.

Fly the colors of the day...

Yesterday I bought nothing, and refrained from posting any new book ads, though I did create one. I'd like to see some feedback on how the buy nothing strike impacted the economy.

I also applied to participate in the Unicorn Art Show, a juried show hosted by the Otherworldly Arts Collective in St. Paul. I knew nothing about it, but received an email inviting me to apply, so I did. The show takes place in mid June and I would only have to supply one piece for hanging/display. Less work. They will  have a sales table to which I could bring small items like greeting cards that showcase more of my work.

Meanwhile I watched the last episode of 'Northern Exposure' via my free-trial Prime Video membership. I loved that series, but the last season was drifting after Joel Fleischman went back to NYCity after going native. Sigh. I liked the ensemble cast and especially the elders like  Ruth Anne and Holling and the natives like Ed Chigliak and Marilyn Whirlwind. I miss them.

As a follow up, I started watching 'The Avengers' starting with season four, when Emma Peel joined the cast. (From the days of Black & White TV!)

I'm thinking of going to the Minicon Committee meeting this afternoon. It meets earlier than the Pool Party. I may stick around for that, but I'm not much for late hours these days and I'd want to be home to give Rajesh a dose of his medicated eye drops. I cancelled my Pawp (pet insurance) policy when they turned down my first and only claim, calling his infection a pre-existing condition.Because I didn't include the bill for the visit where the vet first diagnosed it? Grr.

Set an open course for the virgin sea

WEEK OF Feb 17 - 24, 2025

I’ve been feeling emotionally-overwhelmed lately, helped in large part by the political news and my cat (Rajesh)’s health needs. I’m still waiting to see if the pet health insurance I’ve been paying for will help with that. Meanwhile I’m putting medicated ointment in his eyes several times a day.

I’m still concerned with my zombie book launch, but it’s been taking more of a back seat than I like to admit. The free book promo leading up to Valentine’s Day did well enough: over 230 books claimed and I can hope there will be some feedback in the form of reviews or purchases of other books in the series – I still need to put up some ads for those.

Meanwhile, I’ve had less energy for Terry visits and am presently down to once a week. Her attention span is less than it was, making it harder to communicate or engage her interest for any length of time. The political landscape is on my mind and I don’t want to depress her by talking about that. What can I say? The world is on fire; ready your hoses and buckets.

Sail on, silver girl, sail on by. Your time has come to fly.

WEEK OF January 27-Feb 3, 2025

As of this past week I made some Zombie book launch progress – remembering the ‘Universal Book Link’ titles I have posted through Draft 2 Digital; and was reminded that there was a problem with them because Amazon won’t accept books that have live links to their competitors’ sites. I started on one title and found that my Jutoh application did not transfer to the new computer. I searched all my software disks and couldn’t find the one for Jutoh, so I went ahead and bought a new copy. Not a lot of progress, but since then I added all the Universal Book Links to my spreadsheet.

I had to deal with a hacking attempt on my computer and renewed the McAfee virus protection software.

I visited Terry on Wednesday and Saturday; Saturday so I could combine the trip with attending the Minicon committee meeting.

Meanwhile I’ve been keeping up with daily household tasks – including watering/repotting houseplants and putting out unsalted peanuts for the squirrels.

Ch-ch-ch-changes

WEEKs OF Dec 16-30, 2024

Sadly, I was without keyboard and mouse for about a week after the death of my former desktop computer – even though I managed to acquire a new one (Inspiron All-in-one) which came with wireless peripherals, but instructions in print so tiny I couldn’t decipher it even with reading glasses. I secured an appointment with the Geek Squad as part of the package, but did have to wait over a week for it. As of Saturday afternoon, he showed me the wireless adapter I needed (hidden inside the mouse, but needing to be plugged into a USB port on the back of the computer. Duh.) The techie also managed to extract the hard drive from my old computer and transfer all the data (yay for my internet bookmarks, esp). So now I am getting back in touch with people.

During the interim I visited Terry as usual and attended the wonderful caroling party at Dreampark and have been learning my way around the Win11 OS. I’m also gearing up to start promoting my various publications.

I now have two extra monitors. The literature on my new PC suggests it can handle an extra monitor, but I don’t see how and may have to do some research.

When the gales of November come early

WEEK OF Nov 18-25, 2024

Live long and prosper! I've adopted this as my favorite salutation lately.  It has become all too clear that not everyone lives long and there have been too many of my friends and community and loved ones who have left us behind and I've realized how much emptier it leaves my world. I've seen too many friends struggling to get along in a larger society that isn't always accepting. I really, truly, sincerely wish you all long happy lives and prosperity in the world.

That said, this week I've continued moseying along, taking more baby steps, working on improving my own state of prosperity. I spoke with someone at All American Title who referred me to the Minnesota Uniform Conveyances site for templates, and had a long phone chat with Marty, going over the details for our deal. I feel relieved to have set a date for filing the mortgage doc with the county.

I've visited Terry a couple times again this week and she's in good spirits. She (I surmise) removed the bandage from her dislocated finger. She doesn't appear to be in much pain, but needed both hands to lift her coffee cup.

My Blue Cross Advantage plan put me in touch with a Friendly Helpers program of Lutheran Social Services who sent me a helpful visitor, Jamie, a very nice young woman whose own cat is apparently very similar to Rajesh - and she did some vacuuming for me! Seriously; it's been months since I've attempted to deal with my couple of rugs. She also swept and brought up enough clumps of cat hair to make another pair of cats.

I'm feeling very thankful today for friends and social services and pray to heaven that the new regime does no damage to Social Security and other programs that help people in need.

Don't carry the world upon your shoulders

The first couple weeks of November, 2024

I'm blaming depression for my feeling generally unmotivated, but I have been making baby steps toward getting that loan put together. I've called and visited several title companies. I've continued visiting Terry on a regular basis - this week one visit was aborted when she was sent to hospital after dislocating her left forefinger. Saw her yesterday and she's doing well. I've been keeping myself and Rajesh fed and sheltered and am not setting any demanding goals.

Blessings on my little brother for helping me replace a leaky kitchen faucet. Blessings on Social Security and SNAP benefits for helping me stay housed and fed.

Live long and prosper!

Tie me kangaroo down, sport

I originally posted this on FaceBook, but would like to share here as well.

A friend recently posted asking how people think they might fare in combat with a kangaroo. I thought I'd do poorly in unarmed combat.

On further reflection, I think I might do well if armed with anything from a spear or scimitar to a hand gun, but I'd feel very badly about the damage any of those weapons would do to the poor kangaroo. (!)

Therefore, I'm coming out firmly opposed to initiating any combat with a kangaroo (and other animals that pose enough of a threat that I'd have to damage them in order to defend myself therefrom.) I'm not a vegetarian, but neither am I inclined to kill anything smarter than a chicken or a fish.

I have decided that a net makes a good defensive armament in the face of creatures (like geese and swans) who can't overwhelm me through sheer size and weight.

And you won't find me singin' on this song when I'm gone

WEEK OF Aug 19 - 26, 2024

I made both visits to Terry this past week, and was joined on one by Terry's brother Jim, and on the other by her friend Karen Shaffer who was in town following Worldcon and had also just visited the state fair and had lots of photos to share from both.

Otherwise I met with my Blue Cross care coordinator, with the physical therapist for my hand and attended a seminar on estate planning. The latter was interesting, but I'm not sure how useful when it comes to setting things up to pass on my intellectual property, since I haven't got much in the way of monetary assets. I did learn that you can have up to three million dollars in Minnesota without having to pay estate taxes on it.

That's what it's all about

WEEK OF Mar 18 - 25, 2024

The week began with a frustrating few days of trying to get my eye-drop prescription filled while insurance company claimed it was too soon - despite doctor's orders. Sigh. My usual Tuesday meeting with Terry was delayed on that account and the Friday meeting due to hazardous driving following a night of snow. That may be an issue again this week.

I've kept up with most household stuff, but have been tired and am thinking to take it easy for Minicon this year. I don't have to be in the art show and do author readings and participate on panels and join late night song circles, which are pretty much out anyhow because night-driving is too much for me at present. If I hadn't already paid for my membership I'd be tempted to skip the convention. But just hanging around with friends, playing some games and visiting, all sound like enough fun.

I did attempt to tune my mandolin this week - but broke a string and have not tried to replace it yet. I have another follow-up eye exam on the Thursday before Minicon.

Hello, Darkness, my old friend...

w OF Feb 26 - March 4, 2024

This felt like an extra long week. I made my usual visits to Terry and kept up with a lot infrastructure maintenance tasks, paying bills and making appointments. The big deal was another trabeculectomy on Wednesday morning ,my right eye this time. That's usually my stronger eye, and it's been blurry ever since. Supposedly this will clear up, but meanwhile, I need my reading glasses to read and I have to take eye drops every two hours and I'm not doing much reading to speak of. Typing is hard, too.  I've got a week-after post-op exam scheduled for Thursday. I hope things have improved a lot by then.

Maybe millions of people go by...

Week of February 5 - 12 - Addendum

I really already reported on last week, all except for the weekend, which was mostly chores and laundry. But my goals for the coming week include preparing for the Rivendell discussion on my book on the 24th. I need to re-read since it's been a few years now since I wrote it, and I should post something on my Patreon site about the event, and on Facebook, to make sure people know the digital version of the book is currently available at a discount. (99 cents)

One of Me is Missing:  To fourteen-year-old Sally Knox, the world is a buffet of fascinating things to do and learn. She wants it all: martial arts, theater, sculpture, cooking, robotics, music, computer science - you name it! So, what happens when she gets her wish to be in enough places at once to take all the summer school classes she wants? Complications are just the beginning

Angels watchin' over me

WEEK OF Jan 15 - 22, 2024

It doesn't seem like there's much to say about the last week. It was pretty low key for me after the busy fortnight I'd had before. I made my usual visits to Terry but mostly did a lot of catching up on household tasks, and set a pre-op physical appointment (in advance of the scheduled eye surgery.) I did a fair lot of reading and watching TV and counting my blessings. Thank heaven for naps!

I didn't socialize much aside from Facebook and may have missed events I might have enjoyed if I'd been feeling livelier.

Gods Rest Ye, Unitarians

WEEK OF Dec 25 - January 1, 2023

Christmas week was a busy one. On Christmas Day I went to visit Terry, bringing her an assorted nut mix for a present and visited her again on Friday. On Boxing Day I returned to the DMV and finally succeeded in transferring the title on Denny's old van! Since then I had a new battery installed in the van and have been looking at potential buyers. Meanwhile, I've been keeping up with bills and regular household tasks. I pretty much skipped New Year's Eve, going early to bed, but waking up to the new year with clean laundry and all the trash having been taken out.

On Saturday evening we had a fun filk circle; only half a dozen people, but good fellowship and plenty of seasonal songs with a fannish twist. The potluck was good, with stir fry, fresh fruit and lentil soup. I brought along a bucket of chicken, but left to drive slowly home in the dark through a light mix of slippery rain and snow.

Doctor, my eyes have seen the years

My latest follow up with the ophthalmologist showed the glaucoma in my left eye has gotten worse, so I'm being prescribed a stronger version of the medication. Yay?

Meanwhile I survived another visit to the dentist. Thank goodness for my abilities as an escape-reality artist.

Ah, my friends, we're older but no wiser...

WEEK OF Oct 30 - November 6, 2023

The first snow of the season led me to rearrange my schedule and visit Terry on Wednesday instead of Tuesday. She had a bad day on Wednesday, with a fall after sliding out of her chair. I related all too well after my own fall on the previous Saturday. Sigh. I don't like to think of our mortality and inevitable obsolescence. One of the things I like about science fiction and fantasy is the leeway to dream impossible dreams of life extension technologies or vast futures that can allow for worlds like Phillip Jose Farmer's in which our descendants will find ways to bring us all back to live again...

Anyhow. I made my two weekly visits to Terry and took care of a lot of daily life stuff, like putting the cover back on the air conditioner, taking out trash and recycling, paying bills and washing dishes.

I've been reading Cat in the Stacks mysteries and streaming old episodes of Moonlighting. The dramedy had no contest in luring me away from CSI:NY's all too serious world view.

I've been putting off setting new dental appointments and other minor tasks I should get to real soon now.

We did The Mash; it was the Monster Mash!

WEEK OF Oct 23 - 30, 2023

This was a full week. I visited Terry twice, as usual, but We did the mashswitched up the schedule so that I could be visiting her during the annual fire alarm testing at my condo on Wednesday. (Escaping the noise!)

Then on Thursday I had a filling put in at the U of M dental school. They've gotten to know me there. The needle goes into my upper palate, I  produce a soprano aria, someone nearby says, "Laramie's here!"  At this point I could become a professional dental patient. I'm learning the lingo and I was able to  offer my student and her assistant a couple tips on patient communications: 1) pre-arranged hand signals for the person whose mouth is full of hands/instruments, and 2) a specific scale for rating progress when buffing the new filling: sandpaper to burlap to cotton to silk to satin.

On Friday I was back to visit Terry; I brought along a couple of old calendars that we used to make Halloween masks. She got to be an octopus and I got to be a sea horse.

On Saturday was the annual Mnstf Halloween party, and we had a planned filk circle starting at 2pm. Unfortunately, the only space for it was in an attic. I've been avoiding stairs maybe too much lately, cuz after climbing two flights, my knees just gave out and crumpled under me, leaving me sprawled on the nicely polished wooden floor! I had no idea my knees had gotten so weak. Thankfully, everyone present sprang up and helped hoist me onto the nearest couch. Later (Later, after a lot of fun music) I was able to make my way safely down the stairs again, but was walking with a slight limp by the time I got home. That's a lot better now, and I asked Sarah, our filker massage-therapist about exercises for strengthening knees.

You're gonna spread your wings and take to the sky...

WEEK OF Aug 28 - Sept 4, 2023

I wimped out during the hot weather over the weekend. I had planned to delay my Friday visit to Terry until Saturday and go afterward to the Mnstf picnic. Plans change. Terry was moved to Fairview Southdale for wound care on her feet. I can't afford hospital parking lot costs and in the past have only found her asleep when I try in-hospital visits, so made only one visit last week, and wound up staying home from the picnic, too, being discouraged by the heat and the cost of gas money to travel from Fridley. I did not practice my mandolin, but did get out my soprano recorder and practiced sounding out a few melodies, including  Schumann's Happy Farmer.

Otherwise, I mostly stayed home with the air conditioning, reading, keeping up with the usual chores, errands and TV shows. On Saturday evening I watched a show honoring Joni Mitchell on the occasion of her being awarded the Gershwin Prize. Many stars participated, including James Taylor, Graham Nash, Brandi Carlile, and Cindy Lauper, all performing covers of Joni's songs. I think they missed two of my favorites, so those were playing through my head when I should have been sleeping later. ('Raised on Robbery' and 'You Turn Me On I'm a Radio')
